Freelance CTO Technical leadership for your organisation, from strategy to delivery.
As a freelance CTO I take responsibility for your technology: I set the direction with your management team, build the team that delivers it and stay close enough to the code to know what is really going on.
What I take on One person accountable for technology.
Technology & IT strategy
A technology strategy that follows from your business goals, with clear choices on what to build, buy or leave alone.
Roadmap and budget
A realistic roadmap and the budget that goes with it, explained in terms the rest of the management team can decide on.
Architecture and scalability
An architecture that can grow with the organisation, and a plan for the legacy that holds it back.
Security and compliance
Security and compliance treated as part of the work rather than a project that comes afterwards.
Team and hiring
The right team composition, hiring where it is needed, and coaching for developers and leads.
Delivery and ways of working
Standards, code review and delivery processes that let teams ship predictably without me in the room.
When it fits When a freelance CTO makes sense.
- Your organisation is growing and technology decisions are made without anyone owning them.
- Your CTO or head of engineering has left and the team needs direction while you look for a successor.
- A legacy platform is slowing the business down and you need a plan to modernise it without stopping delivery.
- Investors, customers or regulators ask questions about scalability, security or compliance that nobody can answer with confidence.
- Your developers are capable, but delivery is unpredictable and every team works its own way.
Experience Leadership grounded in engineering.
Before I led an engineering department I spent years as an engineer and consultant, so I know the work I ask teams to do.

Head of Development · UTURN (opens in a new tab)
At UTURN, I led the software engineering department and helped standardise technologies and delivery processes across teams. I was responsible for IT strategy, scalability, compliance, and team effectiveness, experience that now allows me to support clients as a freelance CTO or technical lead.

What does a freelance CTO do?
A freelance CTO takes on the technical leadership of an organisation for a period of time: the technology strategy, the roadmap and budget, architecture, security and compliance, and the team that builds the software. I do that as part of your management team, as an independent professional rather than an employee. The role is also called interim CTO.
How is that different from a technical lead?
A technical lead is responsible for one team or product: architecture, code quality and delivery. A CTO is responsible for technology across the organisation and answers to the business for it. I can take either role; my preference is the CTO role.
Do you still write code?
Yes, when it helps. I have been building software for 11+ years, most of it with Node.js, TypeScript, Vue and React (Native), and I still review code and architecture. As a CTO my first job is to make the team effective, not to be its most productive developer.
Where do you work?
I am based in Echt-Susteren, Limburg, in the Netherlands, and work remote or hybrid.
Which languages do you work in?
Dutch (native) and English (fluent).
How do we get started?
With a call. Tell me where your organisation and your team are today and where you want to be, and we will find out whether I am the right person to help.
